In December 2006, Peruvian President Alan García Pérez, visited Block 67 after the public announcement of the discovery of heavy oil reserves.
From Piraña Sur, President García declared to local media that he was "feeling excited to witness an historic event for our nation".
President García, who was accompanied by Daniel Saba, Board of Director of Perupetro, and Juan Valdivia Minister of Energy and Mines - governmental entities respectively in charge of petroleum contracts and regulations accordingly-, emphasized that the exploitation of Block 67 would bring benefits to Peru especially in the employment levels, as well as to strengthening the country's economy.
He stated that the project would allow Peru to be self-sufficient in petroleum and affirmed the protection of the environment was guaranteed in the contract signed by the company and the Peruvian State.
